May I suggest you look at for ideas. Mailwasher has a bounce feature, download only headers, and heuristic scanning (predicting spam by reading the content of the email email). Good luck.

There is a great tool for Outlook which is called Spamnet (/). It relies on the feedback of users. When enough Users mark a special mail as spam, then it is automatically removed.

Maybe it's pretty easy, if we only have an option to filter all mail (or just make it an fiterrule, exec or something) through an external program .. the only problem i see is how to let these programs interact with moz mail, so your mail/attachments gets deleted/filed. But I have an idea to do this: if the program gives some sort of commands as a result to moz-mail (like delete_attach 1, delete_mail, file inbox ..) The commandline app could be given some parameters like spam-folder, virus-folder ..

My preference would be an auto-bouncing protocol. Basically, you could set up (and on a regular basis *change*) a simple question that has to be answered by a real human being in order for the sender to be considered for inclusion on the MozMail user's whitelist. All email from addresses NOT on the whitelist automatically goes in a Spam folder that is automatically cleaned out after a given number of days. For example, someone writing an email to a user of MozSpam would get a response like this:

The user xyz@foo.com is using Mozilla Spam filtering:

1. If you are not explicitly added by xyz to their email WHITELIST, your email WILL NOT BE READ.

2. You only need to get on xyz's WHITELIST once to be able to send them mail in the future without seeing this message ever again.

3. You can always be removed from xyz's WHITELIST in the future if they so desire.

4. If you are sending unsolicited advertising or other Spam, PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE.

5. If you are quite sure that xyz wants to receive your email, please answer the following personal question in your reply and you will be considered for inclusion on xyz's WHITELIST.

The spam filters I have tried integrate the feature "add to whitelist if the mail is sent by xyz". What I have not found is "add to whitelist if it contains the string xyz". This would allow a user to supersede strict blacklisting rules.
