Why Spam checking?
Why use Open Relay databases?
Let me just say that they are effective, and they are not disturbing the user.
You don't have to keep track of word lists or anything like that,
and you don't have to have a blacklist of domains or whatever.
All you have to do is one single DNS lookup to find out if a message is spam or not.
There will be messages you can't recieve because the user is using an SMTP server that allows relaying.
However, the number of these servers is relatively small, so there might not be too many users getting
accidentially blocked (some servers speak of over 60 percent of their incoming mail traffic being blocked,
almost all of which is spam.
Now think of another thing: By using such a blocker, you shift the cost of sending a message from you
to the sender. Instead of your having to click through hundreds of spam mail messages, the ones who really
want to send a message to you have to take a little more effort if they're blocked: they have to get a
new SMTP server, etc... (not so hard, really... you could use hotmail or any other free provider). But if
their message is important, they finally will urge their sysops to secure their mail servers, or switch
to a decent provider. Again one security hole of the internet being closed...
Why do it with Mozilla?
There are other programs which do the task this program will one day do in a much simpler way. Like programs running in your sendmail or your procmail. However, you have to have access to a UNIX system somewhere. There are also tools for Windows for the same. This program will implement the spam filter inside the mail client without bothering the user too much, and that's why I think it will be a good alternative to commercial tools. If you have access to a Linux box you might want to use the sendmail/procmail scripts you find at www.ordb.org. It's simpler, it's better to implement spam filtering on a machine that is always online, and it works.
